LAODICEA LAGOTTO ROMAGNOLO

Health Confirmation Temperment

Welcome to Laodicea Lagottos!  This website is meant to give you a good picture of who we are and what we are all about.  Ultimately we love Lagottos – showing, breeding, raising and just having them around.  We have been championing this breed for almost 3 years now, and our curiosity about the breed continuously grows.

The Lagotto Romagnolo is a breed of dog that comes from the Romagna sub-region of Italy. The name means “lake dog from Romagna,” originating from the Italian word lago, meaning lake. Its traditional function is a gundog, specifically a water retriever. However, the Lagotto is often used to hunt for truffles.

The breed’s roots are thought to go back at least to 1474 A.D. When the marshlands were drained towards the end of the 19th century and turned into arable land, the vast flocks of waterfowl disappeared and the Lagotto needed to find a new purpose. With their highly tuned nose for searching things out, their keen senses and natural agility they have proven to be very efficient in truffle hunting and are the only dog bred for this purpose.

At Laodicea Lagotto Romagnolo, we are so impressed by the versatility of this breed. Our pups, who are bred as companion dogs and show dogs, are also exploring Search & Rescue, Therapy Assignments and Sporting Events such as Agility and Rally. We are also looking at the Lagotto Romagnolo as a retrieving and gun dog, which they were originally used as. The overall thought has been that we are impressed by the versatility of this breed and have been impressed by the Lagotto as a wonderful companion for everyone in the family.
